Why I sometimes tell a couple not to spend money on something

“Do you think we need more?”
I get asked this quite a lot when I’m designing a wedding.
Do we need something else on the tables? Should we dress that area too? Will the room feel finished? Is there enough?
And sometimes my answer is, honestly, no. I think we’re done.
I know how easy it is when you’re planning a wedding to keep looking for the next thing. You see another idea you love, another part of the venue that could be decorated, or you start wondering whether what you have planned is going to feel enough when you finally see it all together.
But I’m already picturing that finished room in my head.
I’m thinking about where your eye will go when you walk in, the height of the flowers against the room, how the tables will look once they’re fully dressed, where we already have a beautiful focal point and where we actually need a little breathing space.
And sometimes, adding another thing would make absolutely no difference to how beautiful the wedding feels.
I remember looking at designs with clients where we’ve discussed adding flowers to a fireplace, another arrangement to an entrance or more detail to the tables. There’s nothing wrong with any of those ideas. But if the room already has enough happening around it, I’ll say so.
Because I don’t want to add something simply because there’s a space available to put it.
For me, good design is as much about knowing when to stop as it is knowing what to add.
When the proportions feel right, the focal points are doing their job and all the different elements are working together, adding more can start to take away from the things we’ve chosen to make special.
And this is something that can be really difficult to judge when it’s your own wedding. You’ve been looking at individual ideas for months. I have the advantage of standing slightly outside of it and looking at the whole picture.
So when you ask me, “Do you think we need more?”, I’m not thinking about whether we can add more.
I’m looking at the wedding we’ve created together and asking whether it will make it any better.
And if I don’t think it will, I’ll tell you.
Because sometimes the best thing I can add to your wedding is the confidence to say: we’ve got it.
