How The Chelsea Flower Show Highlights The Best Of British

If you are keen on creating a superb floral display, whether for a wedding, a birthday, or a major corporate occasion, you may not have thought about focusing on buying British. However, while it is true that the majority of flowers bought in the UK are imported, the strength, variety and beauty of British horticulture can often be overlooked.

That is why the UK’s biggest summer floral events must show just what British grown flowers can offer. One of these, the Chelsea Flower Show, takes place next month.

Run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and staged in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, the event takes place from May 21st to 25th and features a wide array of fabulous exhibits and displays.

This year’s event includes the usual show gardens, plus sanctuary and theme gardens, with a small army of expert plant growers and garden designers on hand for visitors to meet and discuss all things horticultural with.

Show manager Emma Lake commented: “We will have a bumper show, full of our favourite growers, designers, florists and scientists - the Great Pavilion will be overflowing with scent and colour.”

She added that this year’s particular theme is that of sustainability, showcasing how everyone from flower growers to garden designers can be not just green-fingered, but greener in their activities.

“They are using eco- techniques, low carbon materials and processes that are not only reducing their impact on the environment, but also reducing our waste at the end of the show,” Ms Lake remarked.

This means visitors to the show can take home two messages along with their memories of some delightful gardens.

One is the capacity of British growers to offer a fantastic floral display that will brighten up your event. The other is the growing focus on being sustainable, something worth considering when you buy British, instead of importing flowers that will consequently come with a larger footprint.

Other RHS events coming up this summer include the Hampton Court Flower Show and the Tatton Show in Cheshire, both taking place in July.
